LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

A country full of vibrant colours, full flavours and incredible music, you’re going to have an unforgettable experience no matter how you choose to explore Spain, but there are a few things you can do to make your trip more memorable.

  • Be Vigilant of Pickpockets – Pickpocketing is, unfortunately, rampant in certain tourist parts of Spain, so it pays to always keep your valuables close and within eyesight. Pay particular attention to your belongings if street vendors come close to you or your table to sell you wares – it’s common for them to distract you while stealing from your table!
  • Brush Up on Basic Spanish – The primary language in Spain is Spanish, so it’s worth learning a couple of words and phrases in their native language to help you communicate. At the bare minimum, learn how to say ‘hola’, ‘buenos dias’, ‘por favor’ and ‘gracias’!
  • Expect to Eat Late – When visiting Spain, prepare for later eating times. Similar to parts of Europe such as France and Italy, the Spanish will eat later than other countries, eating lunch between 1-4PM and dinner from 8PM onwards. If you’re hungry earlier, we recommend indulging in the popular tapas.
  • Embrace Sobremesa – Mealtime is a sacred, social event in Spain, and part of this is lingering after your meal to stay and chat. The Spanish will often stay long after meals to enjoy each other’s company, so don’t expect to head off immediately after your lunch or dinner is finished!
  • Pack A Jacket – Despite Spain’s famously sunny beaches, it actually has more cool months than warm ones, so it’s worth packing warmer clothes when you’re visiting – No matter what time of year!
