Climate

The Maldives has a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The dry season, with warm, sunny days and minimal rainfall, is the best time to visit for beach relaxation, diving, and water sports. The wet season brings more rain and occasional storms, but it’s still a great time for budget travellers and offers good conditions for surfing. For the best weather and clear waters, visiting between December and March is ideal.

Capital Cities

Malé, the capital of the Maldives, is home to around 250,000 of the 530,000 people living in the Maldives. As one of the world’s most populated cities, Malé offers a mix of modern attractions and cultural landmarks, such as the 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (Friday Mosque), the Maldives National Museum, and vibrant local markets. While many tourists prefer to visit the Maldives for the beaches, Malé is perfect for those looking to explore the history and culture of the country and immerse themselves in island life.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

A country made up of sparkling beaches and crystal blue water, you’re guaranteed a good time in the Maldives no matter how you choose to travel. However, there are a handful of tips and tricks to make your experience more memorable:

  • Transfers Are Complex – As the Maldives is made up of islands, the best way to transfer between places for any length of distance is via either seaplane or speedboat. While transferring isn’t necessarily difficult and you can island-hop, be aware that transfers are more expensive than catching a bus or other form of public transport, and seaplane transfers will also have luggage weight limits (so don’t go overboard packing!)
  • Arrive in the Morning – On the note of transfers – if you’re transferring via seaplane, ensure you arrive to Male in the morning as the seaplanes will stop flying once the sun sets. This is less of an issue if you’re transferring via speedboat or water taxi, but you don’t want to be caught out spending an extra night in Male!
  • Stock Up on Important Items – Outside of the main islands, there are no grocery or convenience stores on the smaller, private islands – so make sure you stock up on sunscreen, snacks and anything else you may want before you head to your resort.
  • Embrace Island Time – Like many smaller island nations, the Maldives works off of “island time” – operating on a more relaxed timeframe and even, sometimes, their own timezones! While this won’t particularly impact your travel, just be prepared to throw a strict schedule out the window and relax more.
  • Go Island Hopping – Although transfers between islands can be a little pricier, it’s highly recommended to go Island Hopping while visiting the Maldives – as the nation is made up of so many islands, you won’t see everything unless you hop around!
